The Real Conversation Event at Rodney Parade

Would anyone be interested in attending the ‘Real Conversation’ event with me on Thursday 29th November?
This event brings together a number of young people, business leaders and other stakeholders to have a ‘real conversation’ about specific issues. It is an opportunity to discuss the barriers to employment and to explore solutions to enable young people to access work.
I am looking for a group of 4 or 5 students to come with me to this event which, as well as being  really interesting, will be a great addition to your CV.

If you are interested, please give your name to Mrs Brockley in the Library by Monday 22nd November

Collaboration transport

Just a short note to inform everyone that there is a serious accident on the Motorway between Malpas Rd and High Cross. Although we haven't been given specific service delays as of 09.15 Home to School Transport has yet to be completed so this will have an impact on the following Inter School Transport.

Unfortunately services that use this stretch of the motorway will be most severely affected but we are currently experiencing a knock on effect across the whole road network.

UWN - opportunity to take part in Phil Packer walk

On Monday 1st October, the University of Wales, Newport will be hosting the arrival of a very special guest to Wales and we would like to invite some students to join us.
Phil Packer MBE is embarking on an inspirational challenge to raise awareness of adversity in youth. He is walking 2012 miles around Britain in 2012 and at 10am on 1st October, he will be visiting Newport.

Phil suffered spinal cord injury in 2008 whilst serving with Her Majesty’s Forces. In 2009 he rowed the Channel, walked the London Marathon over 14 days and hauled himself up El Capitan. He raised 1.3 million for the wounded and that year became Fundraiser of the Year at the Pride of Britain Awards and was given the Helen Rollason Award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

He is walking 2012 miles across the UK this year in order to spread awareness of adversity and trauma in young people and will spend his first day in Wales, walking 6 miles in Newport.

Prior to his walk around the University’s Caerleon Campus, Phil will be giving a talk aimed at young people and we would very much like to invite some students to take part and then join Phil on a small part of his walk if they would like.

Phil’s talk will take place in the Sports Centre of Caerleon Campus at just after 10am, with his walk beginning at 11am. You would be very welcome to attend. Students can arrive at the Sports Centre at just before 10am, or arrive to join the walk at around 11am.

If interested, please contact Dominic.hannigan@newport.ac.uk

Access to Bristol

Access to Bristol is a programme of 8 afternoon sessions designed to give you a taste of student life at Bristol university.  This offers students who are part of the first generation of their family to go to university or those living in an area where low numbers go to university the chance to gain additional support in their A Level studies and would be a great addition to your CV or UCAS application.
There is also a bursary scheme for those who complete the programme and firmly accept an offer to study at Bristol. This is a really good programme!

Library/LRC info - please read!

You are welcome to use the school Learning Resource Area for quiet study and research.  Here is some useful information...
·         The timetable for the week is displayed on the LRC counter.  This tells you when classes are booked in and when space is available for you to work.  If in any doubt, just ask.

·         Mini Notebooks are available for you to borrow.  Please sign out the Notebook and lead on the booking sheet provided and sign them back in on return.  These are for use in the LRC, study room and common room and are your responsibility while signed out to you.

·         The LRC is a working room so please don’t use your phone or play music as this will disturb others. Please only drink water (no drinks are allowed in the computer areas) and don’t eat anywhere in the room.

·         There will often be other younger students in the LRC with you so remember to set a good example at all times.  Please come in quietly using the main door – the door at the far end of the room is not in use and must remain locked.
Many thanks
