Exciting Work Placement Opportunities within the Engineering and Technology Teams based at Port Talbot and Llanwern

Background
The Link Scheme is aimed at students currently part way through their AS/A Levels.
Successful students will complete a five week placement in either our Technical or Engineering department based at either one of our South Wales locations of Port Talbot or Llanwern. During their five weeks with Tata Steel, the students will work on a project within their chosen area under guidance from the Scheme Manager and will be required to present their findings to a panel of judges at the end of the scheme. The students will then be invited to an awards ceremony where an award will be presented to the individual and their school.

The placements
We have 1 x opportunity within the Technical department at Llanwern and 6 x opportunities within the Technical or Engineering departments at Port Talbot
Placement starts July 16th 2012 and will end August 17th 2012. The awards ceremony will be at a later date.
Office hours are 8.30 – 4.45 pm Monday – Thursday and 8.30 – 3.45 pm Friday
Each student will be paid £150 per week over 5 weeks.

Our requirements
Students must be:
Studying towards their AS/A Levels or equivalent
Available July 16th – August 17th 2012
Studying towards relevant subjects as specified in their chosen project
Be available for interview week commencing June 18th 2012
Responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from the place of work
Application process

Students must complete their applications on line no later than June 3rd 2012
Students must specify on their application which project they would prefer to undertake

Cardiff Medical School Open Day

For the first time this year, Cardiff Medical School is organising a special open day on Saturday June 30th. As places are likely to be taken up very quickly, I thought you may like to have advance notice of this event. The medical school has been through a period of significant development in recent months which has included the opening of the new £18m Cochrane building which houses a new library, teaching areas and modern clinical skills and high-tech simulation laboratories.
Aspiring medics will be able to tour the new facilities, talk to admissions staff and current students and practice their clinical skills!

Students taking subjects at Nash College

Below is a message for students taking subjects at Nash from the Head of School, Mr Wooldridge:

For the last week of the college term (week commencing 2nd July) we have inset booked, which staff need to attend. This is one of the weeks that collaboration students are due to be coming to college. We will have to finish teaching on 29th June and set a piece of project work to be completed for the remaining week and a half of the term. Staff will set this work in the preceding week (25th June).

Year 13 Leavers

The Year 13 Leavers Ceremony is on Thursday 21 June.  In order to make this occasion as special as possible, a contribution of £2.00 is requested from everyone attending so that a buffet can be provided. However much students raise, Mrs Nelson will match it, so please give your donation to Matthew Paskin as soon as possible, or hand it in to me in the LRC and I will pass it on.

If you are interested in having a leavers hoodie, please let Matthew know or add your name to the list in the LRC. Mrs Nelson is currently negotiating a reasonable price - details to follow. 

Buses to collaboration schools

Year 12 and 13 students who are taking vocational courses will need to collect bus tokens from Mrs M Rees in the main Admin office to enable them to attend their lessons in  collaboration schools as the collaboration buses have stopped running for the exam period.

Year 12 students taking AS courses will return to school on 11th June (details to follow) with A2 timetables commencing on 18th June.  Normal collaboration buses will begin running again from the 18th.

Discover Fortunes Challenge Monday July 9th

Glamorgan University have invited us to enter a team in the Discover Fortunes Challenge to be held at the university in July.
Teams need to have 4-6 members from Year 12 and will compete against other schools in a hands-on game developed by the Chartered insurance Institute.  Students will need to work together to plan the financial future of 5 clients and taking part will provide experience for students interested in working in the financial sector in the future and will be a great addition to your CV.
If you are interested, please see Mrs Nelson or give your name to Mrs Brockley by Friday 18th May.

WBQ/ Key Skills

EXTERNAL DEADLINES CANNOT BE EXTENDED AND YOUR WORK NEEDS TO BE ASSESSED, AMENDED AND INTERNALLY VERIFIED FIRST.

X6 Key skills are required to pass the WBQ so if you also have not submitted Problem Solving or Working with others either, these need to be handed in now as well.

Hi

Thanks to Lewis H, Jonathan L, Jeremiah S and Bradley S who actually attended today ;-)

Attached is the Excel spreadsheet as discussed.  You need to:

1) Tart the graphs up with titles and formatted axes
2) Comment on events that happen at the same time (remember 20,000 years ago)
3) Comment on the dust-temp graph and what is seems to imply for global warming -- the more dust.....

Look up Vostok and comment on the location and why it is a good choice for this study -- think people and pollution.
