Cardiff Medical School Open Day

For the first time this year, Cardiff Medical School is organising a special open day on Saturday June 30th. As places are likely to be taken up very quickly, I thought you may like to have advance notice of this event. The medical school has been through a period of significant development in recent months which has included the opening of the new £18m Cochrane building which houses a new library, teaching areas and modern clinical skills and high-tech simulation laboratories.
Aspiring medics will be able to tour the new facilities, talk to admissions staff and current students and practice their clinical skills!
Booking can be made by following the link below. Please note places are very limited so students will not be able to bring accompanying parents!

A potential Doctor in your class?

Deciding to study medicine is obviously a big commitment both for students and their families, and making this decision is even more difficult if the family has no background in medicine.

At Gap Medics we offer students (aged 16 and over) the opportunity to see what the world of medicine is really like. Through our facilities they travel to Africa, India, The Caribbean or Thailand to shadow experienced doctors and healthcare professionals.

Not only does this experience help students to make the right decision about their future career, it is also a useful addition for their UCAS forms.

Recognised by the majority of British medical schools, our hospital work experience is ideal for those students who are interested in medicine, nursing, dentistry or midwifery.

In terms of the practicalities, students are met at the airport by one of our specialist staff team members and are looked after by an extensive staff team throughout their stay.

If you are interested in a career in medicine, our website is www.gapmedics.co.uk where you can find out a lot of detailed information regarding the placements.
Or, call 0191 269 6818 or email us at info@gapmedics.com and we’ll send a brochure in the post.

Discover Fortunes Challenge Monday July 9th

Glamorgan University have invited us to enter a team in the Discover Fortunes Challenge to be held at the university in July.
Teams need to have 4-6 members from Year 12 and will compete against other schools in a hands-on game developed by the Chartered insurance Institute.  Students will need to work together to plan the financial future of 5 clients and taking part will provide experience for students interested in working in the financial sector in the future and will be a great addition to your CV.
If you are interested, please see Mrs Nelson or give your name to Mrs Brockley by Friday 18th May.

WBQ/ Key Skills

I have previously set deadlines of;

30th April for AON and 4th May for Communication.

Thanks to those who have met these deadlines. If you have not you need to see me ASAP especially if you are relying on WBQ for university entry.

X6 Key skills are required to pass the WBQ so if you also have not submitted Problem Solving or Working with others either, these need to be handed in now as well.

Year 13, Applied Science (Friday)

Thanks to Lewis H, Jonathan L, Jeremiah S and Bradley S who actually attended today ;-)

Attached is the Excel spreadsheet as discussed.  You need to:

1) Tart the graphs up with titles and formatted axes
2) Comment on events that happen at the same time (remember 20,000 years ago)
3) Comment on the dust-temp graph and what is seems to imply for global warming -- the more dust.....

Look up Vostok and comment on the location and why it is a good choice for this study -- think people and pollution.

Please complete and email back to gg@newporthigh.co.uk

For those that weren't here -- this needs to be completed to pass Unit 23......

Year 13 Applied Science

Wednesday 8th May

Hi all

I am interviewing today for a new Science teacher, so Year 13 lessons (P2-P4) with GPG will be postponed until Friday.

Outstanding work:
1) Unit 1, as discussed with GPG
2) Unit 23, as discussed with GPG

If you are sure you have completed this, you can:

a) Work on HR / RLL and MJT content
b) Ensure that you have handed in a fully referenced experimental write up

There is no reason why everyone on the course does not have assignments to be getting on with.

Lost property

If you were in the LRC this morning and have lost an MP3 player, please see me.
