There will be a talk from staff from Aberystwyth University about their Summer School in the LRC during TfL on Tuesday 21st Feb.
Please make every effort to attend if you would like to know more about university life.

Those who gain places on the Summer School course will be given support by the university if they choose to apply for a place at Aberystwyth in Yr 13.An excellent opportunity I am sure you will agree.

Changes to TfL sessions

Dear all,
After half term there will be changes to the roomings of TfL groups. GG/SS and JDV will all register in B1:05 and CP/ASC/SDW and LJ will register in B1:13. I would like you all to attend TfL sessions whenever possible to ensure you have the opportunity to meet with your TfLs and to be able to receive up to date information about events at school and within the collaboration.

There are several guest speakers coming to school next term , I strongly recommend you attend as many talks as possible. I have listed all important future dates for your diaries below.

After half term, there is a talk for Year 12 students thinking of going to university. It takes place during registration time on Tuesday 21st February in the LRC.
A speaker from Aberystwyth university will introduce a scheme whereby Welsh students can gain a real advantage when applying for university courses.

The speaker is from Aberystwyth university and will outline special opportunities they are offering for students. Please come along - the talk is brief and the information could be really helpful for you in terms of gaining a university place.

Here are some events that may be of interest to Year 12 A Level students:

Thursday 15th March at 4.30 at Caerleon Comprehensive School, a
presentation by the Open University on Level 4 YASS courses.This is
aimed at learners, but staff and parents are also welcome. Please give Mrs Brockley your name if interested.

Wednesday 21st March at Duffryn High School at 4.30pm, a tutorial for
all learners who are considering applying for Medicine. This will be led
by Dr Susan Pugh of Bristol Medical School. Please can you let Mrs Brockley know if you would like to attend.

We are in the process of trying to arrange a critical thinking type
course, consisting of 5 short modules delivered after school at City of
Newport Campus. I will let you know more about this when I have further
details.

Year 13 Language day

As part of the WBQ it is essential that you complete a language element.
Wednesday the 8th February will be a Welsh Language day where you will be complete Welsh activities all day starting at 8-45.

It is essential you complete the day in order to pass the WBQ. Attendance is compulsory. Timetables will be posted in the common room at the start of the day.

Wednesday 8th February will be a breakdown day focusing on building skills you will need to successfully move into the future and provide you with information about your options after the sixth form.
You will taught in your WBQ classes and ALL Learners must be in school for 8-45.

You MUST bring your Problem solving and WWO workbooks unless you have already submitted them to your TFL.

Attendance is compulsory.

Timetables for the day will be posted in the common room.

Higher Education Convention - sign up now!

A visit to the Cardiff Higher Education convention is running on Monday19th March. The convention attracts over 300 universities, colleges and organisations who exhibit at the event, aimimg to inform you of your future options. The convention is free of charge to attend and you will travel to and from the event by coach.
We will leave school at approximately 11.30am and return by the end of the school day. 50 places are available and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Please add your name to the list on the library counter if you would like to come.
This is a brilliant opportunity to research your future choices, so don't miss out - even if you aren't sure about carrying on with Higher Education it is really important that you attend.

There are many employers who can offer students the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, support them whilst they move from school to the world of work, offer them additional qualifications which will help them in the future and pay a competitive salary. Pure Potential has brought some of these employers to meet bright, talented students who are interested in school leaver programmes.

Industry Taster

Representatives from the accountancy, financial services, investment banking and retail industries will be present. Students will have the chance to choose one of these sectors and attend an interactive workshop which will tell them about their industry, what their school leaver programme involves, their entry requirements, the financial benefits and the qualifications they could gain. This is a great opportunity for students to explore their future options whilst giving them a valuable experience to put on their CV.

We are organising two exciting University Residential Visits which I hope will be of interested to your students:

If you are currently in Year 12 and thinking about applying to university after Year 13, it's time to start doing your research.
University prospectuses are kept in the school Learning Resource Centre and there is plenty of information online - just see me and I'll help you get started!
It is really important that you start your research now and one of the first things you can do is go along to university open days to see places for yourself and talk to course tutors.

Places often need to be booked in advance, so don't delay!
I know it feels early to be thinking about life after school but it really isn't as your application will need to be completed during the first few weeks of Year 13 - it's your future so don't miss out!
